Photograph Portfolio | Behind the Walls
The project started with the question, "If you could photograph something you know nothing about, what would it be?". My initial response was a place that I have never visited. Upon further thought, I came up with the idea of photographing the production of the products that we use everyday. Eventually the project evolved into photographing the things that make the way we live possible that we rarely see. I wanted to focus on the La Crosse area because I have lived here most of my life and many of these things have been hidden from me, out of sight in buildings or in places that I normally don't go. This has been an interesting discovery of what is in various buildings that I have seen throughout my life, but never had a chance to enter.
River Steel
05/02/2011Another place I visited was River Steel. Here I discovered more machines and tools that are used during the shaping of steel. One unexpected discovery was the appearance of quotes along the beams of the building.
Waste Water Treatment Plant
05/02/2011I began my project at the Waste Water Treatment Plant in La Crosse. This provided me with a new view on what happens with everything we flush down the toilet or wash down the sink. The stuff doesn't just disappear, it ends up at this plant where all of the solid waste is removed and the water is then pumped into the river. The most surprising thing is that they only use 2 chemicals in this process. A majority of it is now biological.
